Tierra del Fuego - The End of the World
Posted on February 10, 2011 By Joseph
We’re just back from our shoot in Tierra del Fuegoand I’m happy to report that the trip wildly exceeded our expectations. Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego have always been associated with adventure. And while, we certainly found adventure in abundance we also discovered overflowing servings of majestic natural beauty, abundant wildlife and extraordinary people. On our final night aboard the Stella Cruceros, our 160-passenger luxury expedition vessel, I asked my fellow south-sea mariners what were the crowning moments of the journey. For many it was the wildlife – the Magellanic Penguins, Elephant Seals and scores of birds. For others it was the natural beauty which was epitomized by the excursion into Pia Fjord to Pia Glacier and, as if that wasn’t enough, Captain Sheward steered us thorough northwest arm of the Beagle Channel through Glacier Alley where six magnificent hanging and tidal glaciers – the Spain, Romanche, Germany, France, Italy and Holland glaciers – were on display and close by the port side of the ship. For a very happy number the visit to Islas Hornos and the prayed for, but hardly expected and to-be-believed, sail around the mythical Cape Horn was a life-long dream come true. “This is what it is all about! This is why we came all this way,” said Katy Lesniak from Tierra Verde, Florida. “We’re sailors,” her husband John added, “It’s something we always dreamed of doing and now we’ve done it!” While everyone had their private bests, (circumnavigating the Horn is certainly high on my list) we all agreed the voyage was rich in all the elements that make a travel experience unforgettable.
