Toronto Took Me By Surprise
Posted on September 10, 2011 By Julie
Being a native of the Pacific Northwest I thought I knew Canada. My family vacationed in BC & Alberta often and Quebec is the fix I choose when I’m missing France. But I had never visited Ontario or Canada’s largest city, Toronto. Canadian’s are by nature a very tolerant and accepting people. The country was formed by conference and compromise so it’s no surprise that the culture here is one of acceptance but, I didn’t expect to find such vibrant and thriving ethnic neighborhoods. Canada is not a melting pot of assimilation but rather a nation of immigrants that have been encouraged to keep their own language, share their culture and even more sumptuous, their cuisine.
From Toronto we traveled just 1 ½ hours to the Niagara Peninsula, the largest grape-growing area in Canada. If you’re looking for a wine and cuisine experience, this is the place!
Our Toronto and Niagara Peninsula episode explores the people, experiences and cuisine of the region. Watch for our Toronto and Niagara Peninsula show on your PBS station next summer.
