    Mozambique, Africa

On Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago Kuta Katila means, “Roll your reed mat out on the sand, lay back and relax.”  Always ready to follow local customs, Joseph does exactly that at the Indigo Bay Island Resort and Spa on Bazaruto Island and at the Azura Resort on Benguerra Island. imageSwitzerland truly is a land of superlatives. Nestled in the heart of Europe, Switzerland offers some of the most beautiful scenery and stunning panoramic views. Switzerland’s diversity is seen not only in its scenery but also in the four national languages, its people and different cultures.

The city of Lucerne and the region surrounding Lake Lucerne are generally considered to be the “essence of Switzerland”. In 1291 Switzerland has been founded at the shores of Lake Lucerne. Where else will you find so much that is typically Swiss concentrated in so small an area? South Africa - On Safari!

Joseph gets an elephant-sized helping of the African wild on safari at the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve adjacent to South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park. Using the elegant Lion Sands accommodations as his home base he heads out in search of the Big Five and encounters lions, African elephants, Cape Buffalos and White Rhinoceros. He rounds out his wildlife tour at Camp Jabulani when he literally rubs shoulders with two Cheetahs at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre then joins other camp guests atop a team of rescued elephants on safari through the African bush. As an important complement to the animal adventures, he visits the local villages and schools in order to understand more about the native culture and discover how they coexist with and benefit from tourism.

    Germany’s Winter Carnival

Joseph dons his jester’s cap and heads to the German state of Baden-Wüerttemberg for Fasnet –– Fasnacht –– Carnival. Each town may call it by a different name, but they all agree it’s a non-stop community party that celebrates local culture and chases away the winter blues. Some of the historic carnival characters, like the Narro, date back to the festival’s beginning 500 years ago while others are the products of lively modern-day imaginations. From Konstanz on the shores of Lake Constance to the Black Forest villages of Villingen, Oberndorf, Gengenbach, Elzach and Rottweil, Joseph uncovers the festival’s history and rejoices in the controlled chaos of tolle tage –– Crazy Days!

imageDelightful, flavorful Fredericksburg, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country wine region, warms hearts with its historic architecture, proud history and friendly hospitality. This town of 11,000+ residents (founded in 1846 by German settlers) welcomes over one million visitors annually; mainly because it’s a fun place to visit – with one-of-a-kind, sophisticated shopping opportunities, unique lodging (300+ B&Bs/guesthouses/inns alone), 250+ annual festivals and events, live music scene, and American treasures like the National Museum of the Pacific War, nearby Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park (the Texas White House and Ranch) and Luckenbach, of Waylon and Willie fame. Flavorful because over 70 restaurants tempt the palette with everything from Texas Noveau cuisine to BBQ; but what sets taste buds to salivating are the German bakeries. And Fredericksburg is lovely, with breathtaking Hill Country scenic views – whether from atop Enchanted Rock, or from a porch swing as the sun sets over rolling hills and fields of wildflowers.

    Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia, in Turkey’s rural heart, is a natural wonder and a cultural treasure chest. It is where the East and West seem to have collided and “fairy chimneys” –– fantastic volcanic ash formations –– have risen from the land and tower over beautifully carved valleys. As part of his journey through the Cappadocia Region, Joseph floats in a hot air balloon above the homes and underground cities that are carved out of the limestone rock of the Goreme Valley. He visits holy mosques and ancient churches, delights in Cappadocia’s slower, gentler lifestyle and meets the artisans of the region’s traditional arts and crafts –– rug weaving, ceramics and water painting.

The rooms are built into “fairy chimneys”, formations created by natural erosion over millions of years. Most of the rooms feature Jacuzzis and have views of spectacular formations, some with fireplaces and others converted from 1,200-year old churches, wineries, pigeon coops and living quarters, all creating an amazing atmosphere. There are many marvelous hikes just minutes away and the Valley of the Churches, the open-air museum, is just a ten minute walk.

New Brunswick is Canada’s only bi-lingual province and the peaceful co-existence between the French Acadian culture and the English Loyalist culture gives visitors two experiences for the price of one. Yet all the world’s French in August during the Caraquet Acadian Festival –– a two-week cultural celebration that culminates in a mardi-gras style street party. The Tintamarre
An ancient Acadian tradition!  Literally translated, “tintamarre” means “loud racket.”  Every year, on the 15th of August (the Acadian national holiday) at 6:00 pm, some 25,000 people march down a closed-off segment of Saint-Pierre Boulevard in Caraquet, making as much noise as possible with anything they can get their hands on: pots, pans, shakers, drums, tin cans, whistles, etc. The sheer spirit, the raw energy and the wild enthusiasm of this sea of people adorned in Acadian colours and waving Acadian flags is simply impossible to top.

imageMabuhay!  Welcome! The Philippines is a string of 7,107 islands that offer the traveler diverse cultures, varied scenery, a rich history, endless activities and, foremost, a welcoming people. Which is surprising considering the fact that the country and its people has been used and abused by foreign interests for generations. The Spanish were in charge from Magellan’s landing in 1521 until the Americans conquered and purchased the country in 1898. Fifty years of U. S. control gave way to the Japanese invasion in 1941. For three years, the Japanese brutalized the populace until, as promised, the Americans and Douglas Macarthur returned in 1945. Yet, in spite of invasions, oppressions and hardships theyve suffered, the Filipinos have never lost their feelings of goodwill toward other people and their faith in God. During Travelscope’s visit, you’ll discover many things foremost among them was the Filipino concept of Bahalana which means “Celebrate Life Come What May. It’s a belief that has allowed the Filipinos to prevail in the face of adversity and it is contagious. You feel it in their greeting, you see it in their smiles and you hear it in their songs. Click here or on the image island of Bohol for more information on the Philippines.

imageIf you’re going to the Philippines, you’re going to have to get there. Philippine Airlines flies daily between Los Angeles and San Francisco and Manila increasing to 10 flights a week during Christmas.  The flight from Los Angeles leaves at 10:30pm. Business class on Philippines Airlines is extremely reasonable and worth the try—even though Philippine Airlines offers special amenities and excellent treatment in every class. After dinner and a brief refueling stop in Hawaii you can stretch out and sleep all the way to Manila. Click on the Philippine Airlines logo or here to get more information on the airlines’ routes, fares and packages.

imageFrom the capital city of Manila to the island of Boracay there are a slew of adventures awaiting the traveler to The Philippines. The options range from scuba diving and nature treks to shopping and clubbing.  ccommodations are also wide ranging and relatively inexpensive. The traveler can book an apartment in the chic Makati district of Manila or a deluxe resort on one of the islands. And while on the islands you can often make your discoveries on your own, every new visitors to Manila should hire a guide for a good overview of this bustling and multi-layered city. For a wide range of choices in every category from a company that specializes on giving travelers an authentic local view of the Philippine experience click here or on the www.TravelPh.com logo above. You can get as much or as little guidance with planning your trip as you need.

In the Path of the Conquistadors - Loreto

The ancient Spanish empire stretched from the Americas to Asia.

As soon as your plane sets down in Loreto, Baja California, Mexico the first Spanish capital of the Californias you’ll know why it’s called “the place where mountains come to swim.” The town lies between the Sierra de la Giganta Mountains and the Sea of Cortes.

The aquamarine Sea of Cortes, called the “world’s aquarium ” by Jacques Cousteau, encompasses the Bahia de Loreto National Marine Park which in turn is home to endless varieties of sea creatures including eight of the world’s species of whales, dolphins, sea turtles and sea lions not to mention an ocean full of aquatic consumables.

imageNew Brunswick is Canada’s only bi-lingual province and the peaceful co-existence between the French Acadian Culture and the English Loyalist culture gives you two experiences for the price of one.  Add to that New Brunswick’s natural beauty and the amazing Bay of Fundy tides and a world of adventures await you.  New Brunswick is also a four-season destination and at no time is it more beautiful than in the Fall when the hordes of tourists have gone home and you have the great leaf change to yourself. New Brunswick is also an exciting winter destination.  Contrary to many people’s frozen stereotypes of Canada in general and New Brunswick in particular New Brunswickers donÂ’t hibernate during the winter in fact, if anything they get more active. And in Summer there’s always the Acadian Festival in August to celebrate.  Other celebrations in New Brunswick include apple picking, farmers markets, crafts fairs, the Atlantic Balloon Fiesta in Sussex, musical fireworks during the Kedgwick Fall Festival and the internationally renowned Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in Fredericton in September.  For a complete list of activities and a free travel planner simply click on their logo above.

imageThe capital city of Fredericton is located on the banks of the scenic 450 mile long St. John River and a good place to base your New Brunswick explorations. Everythings “the very best to a New Brunswicker and the best places to meet these friendly, upbeat folk is at Fredericton’s many downtown restaurants, cafes, pubs and at its homey Saturday market. One of the highlights Fredericton’s downtown tour is the Provincial Capital Building an architectural and historic treasure. By just traveling twenty minutes from Fredericton along the St. John River you can step back in time and meet some 19th century New Brunswick loyal subjects at King’s Landing Historical Settlement.  After the American Revolution more than 15,000 British Loyalists moved up the St. John River and created settlements such as King’s Landing.  At the living cultural museum costumed interpreters give you a taste of life during that time. Every October King’s Landing celebrates a 19th century Thanksgiving.  For more on Fredericton’s attractions click onto their logo above and which will spirit you to a website loaded with good ideas.

imageFlathead Lake is the largest natural fresh water lake West of the Mississippi. It’s the beauty of the lake, Glacier National Park and the area’s rivers and streams that bring visitors to the Flathead. With more than 180 miles of shoreline a drive around the lake is no mean feat, yet it’s worth the trip in order to discover the lakeside villages and oddities like the Mission Mountain Winery. Big Fork’s Electric Street is the main drag and is lined with art galleries, restaurants, craft stories, as well as, some traditional items. Some say Glacier National Park is the attraction of the Flathead Valley.  Of course, those who live on beautiful Flathead Lake may differ with that estimation.  Nevertheless, as they say, all roads lead to Glacier so both the park and the Valley receives a million and half visitors a year. Most of them come by private vehicle and make their way through the park over one of the top ten scenic drives in the world the aptly named Going-to-the-Sun Road.  The road climbs at a steady rate with stunning views at every bend. Among many highlights are The Weeping Wall, Triple Arches and Heavens Peak names which give you a sense of the park’s majesty until you reach the Continental Divide at Logan Pass at 6, 640 feet. If youÂ’ve seen A River Runs Through It youÂ’ve see some of the rivers, streams of Montana and understand why running and fishing the Flathead Valley’s rivers and streams is such a popular activity. Brittany, France

Elves and dragons, maids and knights hiking and biking, oysters and crepes these are some of the surprises and pleasures Joseph discovers in Brittany, France the Celtic land of myths and legends.

As you would expect in a region enamored with its history and legends, Brittany is filled with historic towns in fact, there’s even an official classification Cities of Art and History that is approved by the Ministry of Culture. A sub-species is Small Towns of Character and it’s into that category that many of the region’s picture postcard towns fall. The cultural arts and crafts of Brittany are evidenced in the traditional dress including the more than 1,200 varities of headdresses worn by women at festivals. King Arthur and the Holy Grail is one of the world’s most enduring legends and it all began in Brittany. It is in the Forest of Broceliande that King Arthur received the sword Excalibur and the fairy Viviane fell in love with and imprisoned Merlin. The dense forest surrounds the lakeside village of Paimpont where more than 50 kilometers of hiking trails may lead to magical happenings!
