Flathead Lake is the largest natural fresh water lake West of the Mississippi. It’s the beauty of the lake, Glacier National Park and the area’s rivers and streams that bring visitors to the Flathead. With more than 180 miles of shoreline a drive around the lake is no mean feat, yet it’s worth the trip in order to discover the lakeside villages and oddities like the Mission Mountain Winery. Big Fork’s Electric Street is the main drag and is lined with art galleries, restaurants, craft stories, as well as, some traditional items. Some say Glacier National Park is the attraction of the Flathead Valley. Of course, those who live on beautiful Flathead Lake may differ with that estimation. Nevertheless, as they say, all roads lead to Glacier so both the park and the Valley receives a million and half visitors a year. Most of them come by private vehicle and make their way through the park over one of the top ten scenic drives in the world the aptly named Going-to-the-Sun Road. The road climbs at a steady rate with stunning views at every bend. Among many highlights are The Weeping Wall, Triple Arches and Heavens Peak names which give you a sense of the park’s majesty until you reach the Continental Divide at Logan Pass at 6, 640 feet. If youÂ’ve seen A River Runs Through It youÂ’ve see some of the rivers, streams of Montana and understand why running and fishing the Flathead Valley’s rivers and streams is such a popular activity.
