<itunes:summary>I share my personal perspective on cultural tourism in each episode of Travelscope. Travelscope was first created as a syndicated radio show more than 24 years ago. It has since expanded into a PBS television series, an eMagazine, as well as video streaming, a travel blog and audio pod-casts. Travel provides the missing link between cultures. We close each show with a quote from Mark Twain: ‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.” It’s a truth that first turned me on to travel and has kept me hooked for more than thirty years.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Made up of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories, Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China operating under a “One Country, Two Systems” rule where citizens have retained the freedom to flourish. Ceded to the British in 1842 and returned to China in 1997, Hong Kong has been a bridge between China and the rest of the world and a center of commerce and innovation. Award-winning food and fine wines complement Hong Kong’s high standard of living and during Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope’s shoot in Hong Kong Joseph joined his guide Vivian Wong at Tim Ho Wan, Hong Kong’s Michelin star Dim Sum Restaurant. For information on all of Hong Kong’s attractions go to DiscoverHongKong.com. Watch for Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope Hong Kong episode airing as part of Season 7 in 2013.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In March I spoke for the fifth year at the New York Times Travel show. Speaking at the show and meeting my viewers in the New York area is always a treat. Of course, it’s an added bonus just to be in New York. It is indeed the city that never sleeps. Yet, while New York doesn’t need any rest, Julie and I certainly do and this year we made our nest at the Roger Smith Hotel at 47th and Lexington. Perfectly located to everything in mid-town, it is subway close to the rest of the city. In addition, at the Roger Smith you really feel like an honored guest at an inn, instead of just being one of the masses at some corporate property. Over breakfast I had the opportunity to meet the heart and soul behind the hotel owner James Knowles and during this pod cast I’m sure you’ll sense the love he has for his establishment and the joy he gets running it. For more on the Roger Smith Hotel and to book your own rooms go to RogerSmith.com. You can also visit RogerSmithLife.com for some insights into the hearts and minds behind the hotel’s vision. Also check out Julie’s blog entry on our experience on the Travelscope website blog page and check out their entry in Spring issue of our eMagazine. Happy Traveling!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As the song says, “New York, New York is a “hell of a” a town” - for restaurants. In every neighborhood you can find a world of cuisines. Designed by Jean Denoyer, Orsay, located on the Upper East Side at Lexington and 75th Street, is a fine dining establishment that is at its heart a warm, welcoming neighborhood French eatery. Menu selections offer a delicious combination of light classical French dishes and the popular comfort foods of a Parisian brasserie. The proof of a great restaurant is the fact that after you dine at an establishment you know that once is not enough. On a recent trip to New York to speak at the New York Times Travel Show, Julie and I returned to Orsay joined by her daughter, Elise, and Elise’s boyfriend, Jeff. At the end of the evening, everyone was all smiles. Julie enjoyed the amazing “Melted Raclette” salad, I relished the fresh Fish Soup, Elise found the Short Rib “Pot au Feu” extremely flavorful and Jeff was completely satisfied with his man-size cut of Sirlion. In addition, I could not resist the restaurant’s signature Tartares and followed my fish soup with the Japonais — a tuna, wasabi, sesame and tempura creation that was heavenly. A splendid time was had by all! Here is a pod cast I did with manager/partner Hassan El Garrahy about the restaurant. To book your own experience at Orsay, go to OrsayRestaurant.com. Stay tuned for my blog on another of Jean Denoyer’s New York creations: Brasserie Ruhlmann at 45 Rockefeller Center (West 50th St. between 5th and 6th Ave). If you can’t wait, preview the experience by visiting BrasserieRuhlmann.com.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>According to Wikipedia, jet lag is “a physiological condition which results from alterations to the body’s circadian rhythms caused by rapid long-distance transmeridian (east–west or west–east) travel, as on a jet plane. The condition may last several days and a recovery rate of one day per time zone crossed is considered a fair estimate. Considering how little vacation time U.S. citizens have that situation is completely unacceptable. Enter No-Jet-Lag on the scene, a unique homeopathic remedy, which claims to offer relief. <itunes:summary>Whether you’ve smoke them or not, you’ve no doubt heard about Cuban cigars. Their fame is worldwide. In movies, television, novels and magazines, they epitomize the ultimate in luxury. They have a mystic based on their history, their quality, and thanks to the U.S. Embargo of Cuba, their illegal nature and cost. My Cuban grandfather immigrated to the United States after the Spanish-American war in the 1890s and worked blending tobacco for the Hav-A-Tampa cigar company in Tampa, Florida and, later, his own cigar factory in Miami. He was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba — the birthplace of Cuban cigars — so during my visit to Cuba in 2000, I made a point to sample a good assortment of puros, as well as visiting his homeland. This pod cast and several to come feature some of my experiences in Cuba, starting with my some Cuban cigar encounters.

It was quite an accomplishment for me to travel to Cuba considering the fact that none of my immediate family had every been to Cuba, even though we are all of Cuban ancestry. Italian-Americans can go to Italy, African-Americans can experience to Africa, why even Chinese Americans can travel to Communist China — the real evil empire — but, Cuban-Americans need to beg, plead and wheedle their way to the country of their ancestors. In 2000, during the Clinton administration, as a journalist I was able to visit Cuba while most United States citizens could not — legally. And yet, many of them went anyway. More than 50,000 U.S. citizens either found some round about way to legally go or simply ignored the insane almost 50-year-old U.S. boycott of Cuba. Fortunately after eight years of draconian policies during the Bush Administration where Americans were subject to $10,000 fines for traveling to Cuba, once again, there are many legal opportunities to travel to Cuba. It’s a wonderful country. As hoped, during my very short trip to Cuba I discovered many things. I learned Cuba is a fascinating country filled with contrasts and contradictions and that Cubans are warm and welcoming — and have suffered enough already! Yet, the most important thing I learned about “those” people is that they are just people. Like me — and you. People with wishes and dreams, hopes and fears. And I learned that I am neither Cuban nor American, I am just a man and that is what I have in common with all Cubans.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It’s almost Christmas and as much as I love my life in Topanga, California, at this time of year my thoughts invariably drift to my boyhood home in Miami, Florida. While Christmas was not big deal in my parents’ home, Christmas and, in particular Noche Buena (literally “Good Night” and aka Christmas Eve in Latin cultures) was a big opportunity for celebrating for my grandparents. There was always a huge Christmas tree, gifts, cousins, food, drinks and lots of hugs and kisses from lots of very happy adults. As I was growing up during the 1950s my grandparents lived on Ninth Street in downtown Miami. I just took a look at the site on Google Earth and where their and my aunt’s houses were is now pretty much a huge parking lot under the shadow of the Miami Heat’s American Airlines Arena. So, it goes. My grandmother or Abuelita ran a three-story rooming house for Jai alai players and other single men and next door my aunt or Tia did pretty much the same thing. My uncle was an ex-boxer and limo driver and my grandfather or Abuelito made Cuban cigars — using genuine, not yet forbidden by the ridiculous U.S. boycott of Cuba, Cuban tobacco — which leads me into my Christmas story. It’s called Christmas Smoke and it’s my tribute to my grandfather, my family, old Miami, and, of course, Christmas. You can hear it right here. I hope you enjoy it. Julie and I wish you and yours a Very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. God bless us, every one!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>I just returned from a wonderful Mediterranean cruise aboard the Regent Seven Seas Mariner as part of its PTV at Sea cruise. While on shore we did our best to capture a taste of the wonders of Venice, Croatia, Malta, Tuscany and Sicily for season six of Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope. The challenge was formidable and the task sometimes daunting – presenting three countries and six cities in one show – but I think everyone will be pleased with the outcome. One of the highlights of the trip was our visit to Taormina, Sicily, known for its Roman ruins, amazing cuisine and warm hearted people. My Sicilian excursion and our stop in Tuscany, where we visited two wineries and I had my fill of Chianti Classico (if one can ever get their fill of such delicious wine), was put together by our friends at Select Italy. Their tours are an excellent alternative to the shipboard excursions, offering personalized itineraries and genuine encounters. I highly recommend Select Italy if you want an authentic experience. To plan your own Italian adventures go to SelectItaly.com. My superb guide in Sicily was Giacomo Mazza. In a lovely square in Taormina I spoke with him about Americans traveling, or rather not traveling, to Sicily and what they miss.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Volvo is one of the underwriters of Travelscope’s Christmas in Switzerland show, which will begin airing November 15th and run throughout the holiday season on PBS stations nationwide. It’s a perfect match for many reasons. Foremost among them is that fact that Volvo has an overseas delivery program that is not only one of the best around, but also offers a European trip as part of the deal. The program includes two free round trip air tickets to Sweden, hotel accommodations, free U.S. delivery and a number of other extras that makes it a dream come true for travel lovers and prospective Volvo new car owners. There’s an attractive Winter Offer going on right now that includes some features not available during the summer months. To get the inside scoop on this unusual travel opportunity Joseph spoke with Anders Robertson, manager of the Overseas Delivery Program. <itunes:summary>From his travels in Africa Joseph has come to expect much more than grand savannahs where herds of wildebeest and prides of lions roam. Yet, Rwanda expanded even those expectations. No larger than Maryland, Rwanda is a small chunk of Africa shoehorned in between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania. With its verdant hills, jungle wildlife and some of Africa’s highest peaks it’s been called, “a tropical Switzerland at the heart of Africa.” And the wild soul of the country lives in Volcanoes National Park—a sanctuary for most of the world’s mountain gorillas.

The base of Joseph’s gorilla trekking adventures was the Virunga Safari Lodge. The eco-friendly lodge, which sports solar panels and eco-plumbing, is set on a stunning hillside with a panoramic view of the Virunga volcanoes and the lakes Ruhondo and Bulera. In keeping with a general effort in Rwanda to ensure that tourism benefits the local communities, the resort’s eight stone “bandas” (traditionally-design accommodations) are locally-built and a nearby school is funded in part by the guests’ dollars. During this pod cast Joseph’s speaks with resort manager, David Magezi about the resort, their community involvement and gorilla trekking activities. With salons dating from the 14th and 17th centuries, this Relais & Chateaux hotel combines the authenticity of the past with high quality modern comfort. Its acclaimed cuisine can be enjoyed in the sumptuous Louis XIII dining room or on the beautiful terrace. Michelin Star Chef Stephane Andrieux combines the gourmet traditions of the local Perigord and Quercy specialities — foie gras, truffles, lamb and duck — with insightful creativity to deliver unexpected and delicious flavors. You can learn more by visiting ChateauDeLaTreyne.com. In this latest pod cast, Joseph pauses from his kingly pleasures in the castle to interview owner Philippe Gombert.</itunes:summary>

I generally create a custom field for an episode's subtitle, description,

episode size (in bytes), and episode length.

NOTE: For all these fields its important to only use XML friendly entities.

<itunes:summary>Fredericksburg may be in Texas — but if you squint and sniff just a bit you’ll get a real taste of Germany.

Just a 90-minute drive from San Antonio, Fredericksburg keeps its visitors busy with a German heritage, historic museums, varied accommodations, gourmet restaurants, wineries and festivals.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a Disneyland presentation of Germany – with lederhosen and Bavarian chalets — Fredericksburg’s soul may be German, but its history is firmly planted in Texas’ pioneer past. </itunes:summary>
